Gazettal of KCR Extension from Hung Hom to Tsim Sha Tsui

The following supersedes the press release GIS 990430009 issued at 1.56 pm today (Friday). Please note that the passenger rail link mentioned in the second paragraph should be "approximately 1-km" long.

Following is the full text of the press release:

The Government published in the gazette today (Friday) the railway scheme for the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) Extension from Hung Hom to Tsim Sha Tsui.

A Government spokesman said that the scheme would provide an approximately 1-km passenger rail link from the present KCR Hung Hom Station to a new station in Tsim Sha Tsui.

"The Extension runs underground below Salisbury Road and curves to the new station located below the Wing On Plaza Garden and Middle Road Children's Playground," the spokesman said.

"The new station will be linked to the MTR station in Tsim Sha Tsui by a pedestrian subway, thereby providing another point of interchange with the MTR network in addition to the Kowloon Tong Station."

The Extension together with Ma On Shan Rail form one of the priority railway projects recommended under the 1994 Railway Development Strategy. Government is committed to implementing these projects to meet the transport needs of Northeast New Territories and to facilitate further development of the areas.

It is envisaged that subject to authorisation by the Chief Executive in Council, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation will start construction of both projects in 2000 for completion in 2004.

Under the Railways Ordinance, members of the public have the right to raise objection to the railway scheme for the Extension from now until June 29, 1999.

The scheme and the relevant plans are available for inspection at the Central and Western District Office, the Yau Tsim Mong District Office, Kowloon City District Office and the Kowloon West District Lands Office during normal office hours.
