Two feature articles entitled "Attendances of the Government General Out-patient Service" and "Road Cargo Statistics" are published in the March 1999 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics, which is now on sale.
"Attendances of the Government General Out-patient Service" ---------------------------------------------------------- In Hong Kong, government general out-patient service is provided by the Department of Health through a network of clinics distributed all over the territory. It aims to provide primary medical care to the community. Doctor consultation, injection and dressing are the three main types of services provided by the government general out-patient clinics. In areas far away from the public hospitals, some government general out-patient clinics also provide 24-hour accident and emergency service to the public.
Over the years, the health services offered at the government general out-patient clinics have been expanded to cope with the changing pattern of medical conditions of the patients and the workload of the clinics have increased substantially. Close monitoring of the work performance coupled with effective data analysis are therefore crucial for the provision of quality and efficient general out-patient service. This article gives an outline of the performance of the service through the analysis of attendance statistics for the period 1993 to 1997.

"Road Cargo Statistics" ----------------------- Attributable to its unique geographical location, Hong Kong has acted as a gateway to the mainland of China (the Mainland) over the years. In particular, road traffic has long been an important means for transporting goods between Hong Kong and the Mainland. There are currently three control points, namely Man Kam To, Sha Tau Kok and Lok Ma Chau, connecting the north of the New Territories and Shenzhen.
With the increasing significance of outward processing trade in the Mainland, the volume of road cargo has grown considerably over the years, though showing some levelling-off in 1998. Development in the area may be analysed with reference to the road cargo statistics published in the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics.
This article describes the road cargo statistics from 1990 to 1998. Breakdowns by control point and type of goods vehicle are also presented. Moreover, the average weight of cargo carried by a goods vehicle analysed by type of goods vehicle is published.
