Squash double-courts open for public use

The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Urban Council:

The squash double-courts in the newly open Aberdeen Tennis and Squash Centre have become the focal attraction during a visit by members of the Provisional Urban Council's Capital Works Select Committee and Recreation Select Committee today (Friday).

Members of the two Select Committees were particularly impressed by the uniqueness of the facility which is the first of its kind under the Council management.

A Council spokesman said that double-courts allowed four players to play at a single time whereas only two players were allowed in the conventional single-courts.

"Because of the increased number of players and to avoid injuries, the wearing of goggles in the double-courts during the game is compulsory for eye protection," he said.

Notices have been put up at the venue to advise players of the rule and remind them to wear proper sport clothing.

In addition to the two squash double-courts, there are eight single-courts and eight tennis courts in the Aberdeen Tennis and Squash Centre available for public use.

After touring around the Centre, the Councillors moved on to the UC Ap Lei Chau Complex at No. 8, Hung Shing Street to inspect the work progress of the Complex.

The Complex is partially open with facilities such as market, cooked food centre, children playroom and multi-purpose game room while the library, indoor bowling green and fitness room will shortly open for public use.
