In response to press enquiry on Mr Chim Pui-chung(s application for leave of absence to attend the Legislative Council meeting on September 9, 1998 for the motion to consider his membership of the council consequent upon his conviction and sentence, the Correctional Services Department today (Tuesday) issued the following statement:

Mr Chim Pui-chung has applied to the Commissioner of Correctional Services for leave of absence to attend the Legislative Council meeting on September 9, 1998 for the motion to consider his membership of the Council consequent upon his conviction and sentence.

The Commissioner has determined conditions and restrictions relating to custody and escort during the leave of absence under which such leave of absence will be granted. Such conditions and restrictions are necessary and applicable to all prisoners in like circumstances.

Mr Chim has declined to undertake the prescribed conditions and restrictions, in which circumstances the requested leave of absence cannot be granted.
