HK Island bus service arrangements after August 31
midnight
***************************************************
The Transport Department announces today (Sunday)
that the last journeys under the existing China Motor Bus
(CMB) franchise will depart before midnight on August 31.
A spokesman for the department said passengers who
wish to ride on a CMB bus under its franchise should
therefore board the bus before midnight.
Upon completion of the last journeys, the CMB buses
will return to depot where they usually call at to
complete the routine.
"Both New World First Bus (NWFB) and CMB will have
insurance coverage for their after midnight operation
period, including third party liability. Passenger should
be adequately protected," the spokesman said.
NWFB will use its own buses to operate the remaining
trips that depart after midnight under its new franchise
but at reduced frequencies.
The spokesman reminds passengers that the last
departure of these 18 routes will remain the same as
scheduled.
The spokesman also reminds members of the public that
most of the franchised bus routes on Hong Kong Island will
be operated as usual on Tuesday (September 1), except with
different operators.
A changeover of bus franchise from CMB to NWFB will
take place after midnight of August 31.
The new franchisee together with Citybus and Kowloon
Motor Bus (KMB) will take up over 100 CMB's franchised
routes.
Speaking on this, the spokesman said: "There will be
no major change in routings and bus stop arrangements for
over 90 per cent of the routes.
"However, 11 packages of routes currently operated by
CMB will be rationalised through improvements and
adjustments of the franchised routes on Hong Kong Island
to enhance service efficiency.
"These routes will either be replaced by introducing
new services, or by extending coverage of existing
services and strengthening them." (see Annex A)
NWFB will operate two new short-working morning peak-
hour routes, 4X and 8P, for Wah Fu and Siu Sai Wan
respectively.
These two routes serve as replacements for CMB routes
504 and 80.
Three new Citybus routes, 25A, 25C and 37X, are now
running similar to and will replace CMB routes 11A, 25M
and 537 on Tuesday.
The interface arrangement enables passengers to be
familiar in advance with the replacement of public bus
services.
CMB routes 10A, 79, 721, 38A and cross harbour route
303 will be replaced by strengthening and adjusting
existing routes 18, 78, 720, 38 and 681P.
CMB cross harbour route 337 will be cancelled without
replacement in view of low patronage.
Affected passengers should take KMB route 37M and
change for Mass Transit Railway at Kwai Hing for their
destinations.
NWFB will take over 90 routes, including 31 cross
harbour bus routes (see Annex B).
Citybus will take over six local routes and five
cross harbour routes while KMB will run two CMB cross
harbour routes (see Annex C).
Relevant information is available on Transport
Department's home page at http://www.info.gov.hk/td from
Tuesday.
The home pages of Citybus and NWFB will also carry
related route information for the convenience of
passengers.
Moreover, NWFB, Citybus and the Transport Department
will extend services of their information hotlines to
assist passengers.
These hotlines are:
* New World First Bus : 2136 8888
* Citybus : 2873 0818
* Transport Department : 2829 5258
The operating hours of the department's hotline will
be extended to between 9 am and 9 pm on August 31,
September 1 and 2.
Further extension of services will be considered
subject to demand, the spokesman noted.
