Government statement on Peter Lai's resignation

***********************************************

In response to media enquiries, a government spokesman today (Friday) dismissed as "groundless" media reports which associated the resignation of former Secretary for Security, Mr Peter Lai, with requests by the Mainland security authorities to share crime data with the Hong Kong Police.

"Mr Lai has made it very clear in a statement issued on July 27 that he left the civil service for personal reasons.

"The reports in question, which alleged that the Mainland security authorities had asked to link up with the Hong Kong Police computer data on criminal records and intelligence, are purely speculative. There is no truth in them whatsoever," he said.
