The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Urban Council:

The Chairman of the Provisional Urban Council's Libraries Select Committee, Mr Kam Nai-wai and member Mr Lee Kwok-keung, today (Saturday) officiated at the opening ceremony of the PUC Tsz Wan Shan Public Library.

"With the opening of this new library, there are altogether 5 public libraries in Wong Tai Sin District. The extension work of Lok Fu Public Library is now progressing in full strength and is expected to complete by the end of this year." Mr Kam said.

He added that the Five Year Plan of the Council's Libraries Select Committee has also proposed to provide another district library with a total area of 2,500 square metres in the Upper Wong Tai Sin Redevelopment Project and a small library in Fu Shan Estate.

The PUC's Tsz Wan Shan Public Library at Shop 702 in Tsz Wan Shan Shopping Centre at 23 Yuk Wah Street in Kowloon has a gross floor area of 500 square metres and will have an initial stock of 45,000 books.

Besides an adult and a junior library, it also has a newspapers and periodicals section with over 100 titles, an extension activities room and a children's corner. The children's corner is specially decorated with brightly coloured murals for holding activities such as story-telling sessions and children's hours to encourage a reading habit among the very young.

Being a fully computerized library, the computer terminals will soon be ready for readers to search information on the Internet as well as the CD-ROM network of the City Hall Reference Library.

The library opens from 10 am to 7 pm daily except Thursday when it is closed. It closes at 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and at 1 pm on public holidays.

End/Saturday, July 18, 1998
