1998 Honours List

     The 1998 Honours List will be published in the
Government Gazette today(Wednesday).  This is the first
full Honours List since the reunification.

     The Chief Executive has accorded an honour or award

and community service and for his distinguished
contribution to the preparatory work for the establishment
of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

     Sir Run Run is awarded the GBM for his valuable
contribution to the development of the local film and
television industries in Hong Kong.  He has also made an
outstanding contribution to the development of the
performing arts, education, and medical and welfare
services in Hong Kong.

     Mr Wong is award the GBM for his outstanding
contribution to the development of the new Hong Kong
International Airport at Chek Lap Kok and for his long and

contribution to the development of the Hong Kong film
industry and for his achievement as a world-class film

     Mr Lau is awarded the GBS for his long and
distinguished public and community service in Hong Kong,
in particular his work on the Tuen Mun Rural Committee,
the Heung Yee Kuk, the Tuen Mun District Board, the
Provisional Regional Council and the Yan Oi Tong.

Dr CHENG Hon-kwan

     Dr Cheng is awarded the GBS for his significant
contribution to the development of education in Hong Kong
and for his outstanding service in the promotion of
industry and applied research.

Dr TSE Chi-wai, Daniel

     Dr Tse is awarded the GBS for his outstanding
contribution to the monumental task of translating the
complete statute law of Hong Kong from English to Chinese.

     Mr Kwong is awarded the GBS in recognition of the
loyal and distinguished service he has rendered to the
Hong Kong community and the Government over the past 25
years.

     Mr Lo is awarded the GBS for his public and community
service and for his significant contribution to the
preparatory work for the establishment of the Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region.

     Miss Tam is awarded the GBS for her public and
community service and for her significant contribution to
the preparatory work for the establishment of the Hong

          Medal for Bravery (Gold) (MBG) (2 names)
          ----------------------------------------

Mr LEE Ying-kwong (deceased)
----------------------------

     Mr Lee is awarded the MBG posthumously in recognition
of his bravery and self sacrifice in helping others.  On
June 9, 1998, despite extreme danger to himself, he went
down into a flooded nullah in Quarry Bay to save two boys.
After saving one boy, he went back the second time to save
the other boy.  He was swept away by the raging flood
while trying to reach the second boy and was drowned.

Mr Thomas Frederick Crosier LARMOUR (deceased)
----------------------------------------------

     Mr Larmour is awarded the MBG posthumously in
recognition of his bravery and self sacrifice in helping
others.  On August 2, 1997, Typhoon Victor passed directly
through Hong Kong and the No. 9 Tropical Cyclone Warning
Signal was hoisted.  Despite extreme danger to himself, he
attempted to warn two young men sitting on the steps on
the sea wall in Stanley and to assist them when they were
swept into the sea.  He himself was swept into the sea by
big waves and was drowned.

     Dr Fang is awarded the SBS for his significant
contribution to the development of medical services,
continuing medical education and the medical profession in
Hong Kong.


Mr LEE Cho-jat

     Mr Lee is awarded the SBS for his distinguished
public service and for his contribution to the preparatory
work for the establishment of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region.

Mr LI Shu-fai
-------------

     Mr Li is awarded the SBS for his distinguished and
dedicated service in the Customs and Excise Department.
He will retire (as Commissioner of Customs and Excise) by
the end of 1998 after serving 34 years with the
Government.

Mr SHENG Len-tao, Andrew

     Mr Sheng is awarded the SBS for his contribution to
the development of Hong Kong as an international financial
centre and for his work in strengthening Hong Kong's
financial infrastructure.

dedicated service in the Marine Department.  He retired
(as Director of Marine) in March 1998 after serving over
26 years with the Government.

     Mr Cheuk is awarded the Hong Kong Immigration Service
Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of his
outstanding performance and dedicated service in the
Immigration Department.  He is now an Assistant Director
of Immigration and has served in the Department for over

     Mr Tong is awarded the Hong Kong Customs and Excise
Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of his
outstanding performance and dedicated service in the
Customs and Excise Department.  He is now an Assistant
Commissioner of Customs and Excise and has served in the
Department for over 31 years.

Miss Bonnie WONG

     Miss Wong is awarded the Hong Kong Correctional
Services Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of
her outstanding performance and dedicated service in the
Correctional Services Department.  She is now an Assistant
Commissioner of Correctional Services and has served in
the Department for over 28 years.

Mr PANG Sung-yuen, Kelvin

     Mr Pang is awarded the Hong Kong Correctional
Services Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of
his outstanding performance and dedicated service in the
Correctional Services Department.  He is now an Assistant
Commissioner of Correctional Services and has served in
the Department for over 27 years.

     Mr Cheng is awarded the Hong Kong Correctional
Services Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of
his outstanding performance and dedicated service in the
Correctional Services Department.  He is now the Deputy

     Mr Li is awarded the Hong Kong Independent Commission
Against Corruption Medal for Distinguished Service in
recognition of his outstanding performance and dedicated
service in the Operations Department of the ICAC.  He is
now a Deputy Director of Operations and has served in the
ICAC for over 21 years.

Mr KWOK Man-wai

     Mr Kwok is awarded the Hong Kong Independent
Commission Against Corruption Medal for Distinguished
Service in recognition of his outstanding performance and
dedicated service in the Operations Department of the
ICAC.  He is now the Director of Operations and has served
in the ICAC for over 23 years.

     Mr Chow is awarded the BBS for his long and dedicated
community service in the Yau Tsim Mong District and for
his contribution to the development of district
administration in Hong Kong.

     Mrs Wong is awarded the BBS for her dedicated and
meritorious service in the Hong Kong Police Force.  She is
currently an Assistant Commissioner of Police and has
served 36 years with the Government.

meritorious service in the Civil Service Training and
Development Institute (CSTDI).  She is currently Director,
CSTDI and has served 26 years with the Government.

community service in the Sai Kung District and for his
contribution to the work of various boards and committees.

service he has rendered to less privileged groups in Hong
Kong, particularly the elderly, the homeless and recent

last 45 years and for his long and dedicated community

Service.  He is currently Tactical Force Commander of the
Civil Aid Service and has served over 24 years with the

He has recently retired (as Principal Government
Geotechnical Engineer) after serving over 20 years with
the Government.

recently retired (as Senior Assistant Director of Housing)

community service in the Wong Tai Sin District and for his
contribution to the work of the Housing Authority and the

contribution to the work of heritage conservation in Hong
Kong and for his long and dedicated service as a member of
the Antiquities Advisory Board.

     Mr Poon is awarded the BBS for his dedicated and
meritorious service in the Housing Department for the past
24 years. He is currently Deputy Director of Housing.

retire (as Deputy Director of Education) in September 1998
after serving over 35 years with the Government.

     Miss So is awarded the BBS for her significant
contribution to the development of education in Hong Kong,
particularly mother-tongue teaching.  She served on a
number of advisory boards and committees, including the
Board of Education, the Curriculum Development Council,
the Language Fund Advisory Committee, the Working Group on
Language Proficiency and the Working Group on Six Form
Education.

Mr Joseph KOO

     Mr Koo is awarded the BBS for his significant
contribution to the development of the local popular music
industry and for his personal achievement in popular
music.


           Medal for Bravery (Bronze) (MBB) (4 names)

Mr HO Fung-cheung
-----------------

     Mr Ho is awarded the MBB in recognition of his
bravery in saving a fisherman during a search and rescue
operation some 65 miles south of Hong Kong on April 19,
1998.  Mr Ho had shown exemplary courage in the operation
despite the danger to himself.

Mr SUM Kwong-ho
---------------

     Mr Shum is awarded the MBB in recognition of his
bravery in saving the life of a 65-year-old man who
attempted to commit suicide on June 10, 1998 by jumping
into the sea.  Mr Shum had shown exemplary courage by
going into the sea despite the danger to himself.

Capt Trevor Keith MARSHALL

     Capt Marshall is awarded the MBB in recognition of
his bravery in a rescue operation in the floods in the New
Territories on May 24, 1998.  He had shown exemplary
courage in the operation despite the danger to himself.

     Capt Tang is awarded the MBB in recognition of his
bravery in a rescue operation in the floods in the New
