Transport arrangements for MTR new extension
********************************************

A comprehensive traffic and transport network has
been drawn up and ready to serve the Mass Transit Railway
(MTR) new extension, Tung Chung Line (TCL), upon its
opening next week.

Speaking on the arrangements today (Friday), a
spokesman for the Transport Department said: "The TCL
stations are within easy access for both commuters and
motorists.

"All stations are well connected to existing road
networks.

"There are transport interchanges adjacent to the
stations, holding bus, green minibus (GMB) and taxi stands
as well as vehicles, including coaches, drop-off/ pick-up
areas."

On public transport, a number of existing bus and GMB
routes have been diverted to route via the TCL stations.

Commuters can gain access to various stations by a
variety of public transport modes.

"The Transport Department will monitor the traffic
and transport situations after the opening of Tung Chung
Line and will introduce changes or improvements whenever
necessary," the spokesman added.

Traffic arrangements
--------------------

TCL will commence services at 7 am on June 22. It
will operate from 7 am to 8 pm daily between June 22 and
July 5. Normal services similar to other MTR extensions
will be resumed from July 6.

There are six TCL stations: Hong Kong, Kowloon,
Olympic, Lai King, Tsing Yi and Tung Chung.

Hong Kong Station located at the Central Reclamation
Area (Phase I), an extension of the existing Central
Station of MTR Island Line.

Motorists on Connaught Road Central heading for this
station should route via Man Yiu Street while those on
Rumsey Street are advised to travel via Man Po Street and
Man Yiu Street.

Vehicles drop-off/pick-up areas are provided at
Harbour View Street and Connaught Place. During non-peak
hours, loading activities are allowed on Connaught Road
Central near World Wide House.

The Kowloon Station is near the Kowloon entrance of
Western Harbour Tunnel.

Vehicles on Jordan Road and West Kowloon Highway can
access the Kowloon Station via Nga Cheung Road.

Vehicles on Canton Road or Ferry Street should route
via Wui Cheung Road, Austin Road West and Nga Cheung Road
for the station.

Olympic Station is to the west of Tai Kok Tsui Bus
Terminus near Hoi King Street.

A transport interchange at Hoi King Street has been
currently under construction and will be opened for use by
the end of July. Drop-off/pick-up areas for all classes of
vehicles will be provided.

Before its opening, passengers taking bus routes
terminating at Tai Kok Tsui Bus Terminus for Olympic
station should observe the existing bus stops at Cherry
Street and Tai Kok Tsui Road.

Other vehicles can drop-off/pick-up passengers at Hoi
King Street and Road D2, a local road which has yet to be
named. It can be reached via Cherry Street.

For commuters from the New Territories, it will be
more convenient and direct for them to take the TCL via
Tsing Yi Station at Tsing King Road.

Motorists heading for Tsing Yi Station may take Tsing
Tsuen Road (Tsing Yi North Bridge) and Tsing King Road.

There will be a vehicular ramp off Tsing Yi North
Bridge connecting the parking areas and the drop-off/ pick-
up areas on the fifth floor of the station.

"Yet, the ramp will not be opened for vehicular
traffic until July 6 when Airport Express Line (AEL)
commissioned," the spokesman said.

The end station of TCL, Tung Chung Station, serves
mainly residents from the new town and the Lantau Island.

Motorists can reach the station via Shun Tung Road
and Tat Tung Road once they have arrived at Tung Chung New
Town. Drop-off/pick-up areas are available at Tat Tung
Road and Hing Tung Street.

The spokesman added that directional signs will be
erected to guide pedestrians and motorists on how to
access all TCL stations.

TCL (see Annex B).

"The New Lantao Bus will enhance its services to cope
with the increase in travelling demand," the spokesman
said.

Moreover, KMB will introduce two new feeders to
Kowloon Station as the Airport Express Line (AEL)
commences on July 6 (Annex C).

Commuters taking TCL may take the shuttle services
available at the public transport interchange adjacent to
Tung Chung Station for the new airport and various working
areas within.

A total of six such new shuttles will start operating
on June 22 (see Annex D).
