Chief Secretary ends three-day Washington visit

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Anson Chan, completed the last of her three days in Washington today (Friday, June 12, Washington time) with a number of press events briefing journalists on her calls on congress and the administration.

The National Press Club first hosted a press conference where Mrs Chan spoke about her meetings with First Lady Hillary Clinton, members of the House and Senate leadership, the Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich and Secretary of Treasury, Robert Rubin.

She was asked about Hong Kong's economy in light of the Asian financial crisis and fielded questions on how the recent devaluation of Japan's currency would effect Hong Kong. Mrs Chan stated her concern and expressed Hong Kong's commitment to the linked exchange rate between Hong Kong and US dollars.

Mrs Chan was also received by the editorial board of the Washington Post and was the guest of honour at a lunch hosted by the Heritage Foundation think-tank.

The final day in Washington was concluded with an interview on the nationally broadcast Jim Lehrer Newshour. Mrs Chan addressed questions on Hong Kong's recent Legislative Council election and the steps outlined in the Basic Law that providing for further democratisation.

When asked about Hong Kong-US relations, Mrs Chan said, "The US has been a good friend to Hong Kong. We have a lot in common on trade, cultural and human issues. The US is optimistic of Hong Kong's future and the degree of good will and support remains strong."

Mrs Chan departed Washington DC on Saturday en route to Seattle.
