The Government proposes to construct a new footbridge system along Mong Kok Road and Sai Yee Street in Mong Kok to meet future pedestrian demand.
Mong Kok is one of the most populated districts in Hong Kong. The existing footpath is relatively congested. It is anticipated that there would be an increase in pedestrian flow generated by future developments in the area. It is necessary to provide a grade separated pedestrian walkway system.
The project comprises the construction of a covered footbridge with an approximate 8.5-metre clear width along Mong Kok Road across Nathan Road to Sai Yee Street and with an approximate 5.5-metre clear width along Sai Yee Street from Mong Kok Road to connect to the improved footbridge at Bute Street.
Staircases, escalators and lifts will be built to provide access for pedestrians.
The project also includes the construction of a Mass Transit Railway station entrance extension at Sai Yeung Choi Street; ancillary ground level works, drainage and landscaping works.
Works will be carried out in late 1998 by a private developer as a community project and will take 24 months to complete. The Government will take over the management and maintenance of the footbridge system upon its completion to the satisfaction of the Government.
Members of the public may now inspect the plan and scheme at the following offices:
* Central and Western District Office Public Enquiry Service Centre ground floor, Harbour Building 38 Pier Road, Central
* Yau Tsim Mong District Office Public Enquiry Service Centre ground floor, Mong Kok Government Offices 30 Luen Wan Street, Mong Kok
* District Lands Office (Kowloon West) Yau Ma Tei Car Park Building 10th floor, 250 Shanghai Street Kowloon
Enquiries on the proposed works can be made to the Highways Department (Kowloon Region) on 2707 7235.
Any person who wishes to object to the works or the use, or both, is required to send his objection in writing to the Secretary for Transport, Central Government Offices (East Wing), second floor, Lower Albert Road, Hong Kong by June 30 this year.
