The officers raced to the scene when a Filipino woman departing for Manila became emotionally agitated and caused a disturbance to other passengers at the Departure Hall of the Hong Kong International Airport. The officers tactfully calmed down the woman and sent her to hospital for observation, gaining the praises of the Airport Authority and the airline concerned.

While patrolling in the Nam Cheong MTR Station, the officers spotted an elderly man who matched the description of a "missing person at risk". After confirmation, the officers took good care of the elderly before he was reunited with his wife.

The visitor approached SGT Pang for help after he had lost his wallet while travelling on MTR. There was no sign of the wallet despite thorough enquiries by SGT Pang. As the visitor had lost all his money and credit cards, SGT Pang lent the visitor $150 for him to return to Shenzhen. Upon returning home, the visitor sent a thank you email to SGT Pang.

"The officers worked hard on my case. My whole family was deeply moved by their service-oriented spirit, which has safeguarded Hong Kong's stability and prosperity," the resident noted.

In a letter to YLDIV, the American Chinese said the services the officers provided for him confirmed what he often heard in the US - "Hong Kong has a police force with high efficiency and a strong sense of responsibility". Shortly after he had made a 999 report of leaving behind in a mini-bus a suitcase containing a passport, an air ticket and US$1,000, the officers quickly arrived at a mini-bus terminal and located the lost property.

The resident said the car her husband was driving suddenly broke down in the busy Garden Road, causing traffic congestion. As the resident's husband failed to restart his car, SPC Tao quickly provided assistance, first resolving the congestion by directing traffic, restarting the car and then moving it into a nearby car park. He also summoned a tow truck on the motorist's behalf before continuing with his other duties. In a letter to CP, the resident described SPC Tao as "an example of Hong Kong's finest at their best".

The resident, his wife, and their six-year-old son headed for the Big Wave Bay in a motorised sampan, but the vessel capsized in very rough seas. The family managed to reach shore but could not leave the scene because the sampan's engine had broken down. To make matters worse, big waves prevented a police rescue vessel from reaching the stranded family. Braving big waves and strong wind, officers swam ashore and eventually brought the family to safety. In a letter to PPRB, the resident said his family's ordeal showed that the services provided by the Force are comprehensive, efficient and reliable.

A taxi driver handed in at Waterfront Police Station the briefcase the resident had left behind, but the only clue for the officers was a work permit with a company logo. Searching company logos on the Internet, they successfully traced the resident's company. Victim of theft case involving $3 million worth of jewellery

In a letter to CP, the victim said his case was first reported to the District Anti-triad Squad, and the initial investigation engaged more than a dozen of officers from different sections. The performance of the officers handling the case was highly commendable, showing an "admirable sense" of vocation, professionalism and competence. Although investigation is still underway, his case "has been put in good hands", the victim added.

The Director greatly appreciated the support and advice the officers gave for her company's private event for a celebrity. The resident commended CO Kwok for his ingenuity in successfully locating him after a taxi driver handed in the resident's computer and briefcase. Having nothing to go by, CO Kwok turned on the computer to look for clues. As the computer is security-code protected, the only clue that he could see was "BPEP". He then made an extra effort and searched the Internet for "BPEP". Out of many possibilities, he found the resident's company. "I was most pleased and surprised with the recovery of my computer and was very impressed with the combination of good system, training, and individual ingenuity," the resident said in a letter to CP.

In a letter to RC HKI, the management committee commended the officers for neutralising a card fraud syndicate. Their painstaking efforts led to the arrest of a key suspect for fraudulently obtaining credit cards and personal loans, successful prosecution and full recovery of the proceeds of the crime.

The Coordinator thanked the officers for their support and assistance in providing emergency outreaching services to a relapsed psychiatric patient at Shek Pai Wan Estate when Acting SP Wright promptly deployed officers to assist her team. Immediately following WIP Pang's telephone conversation with the Unit Coordinator, PSU2 officers worked out a strategic plan with the team to protect the Coordinator while she was counselling the agitated patient at the scene, and later to escort the patient to hospital.

The information provided by the resident about her son was only a birth certificate, but the WPC took only a couple of hours to obtain important clues that eventually led to successfully locating the young man's residential address.

On behalf of his neighbours in Stanley Pat Kan, the resident thanked SSGT Leung and his officers for their exemplary performance in handling the discovery of the dead body of an Austrian woman in a house in Pat Kan. SSGT Leung's leadership and deployment of officers facilitated the communication between the police and the residents. Whilst discharging their duties in the neighbourhood, SSGT Leung and his team warmed the residents with care and courtesy. When the deceased's house was re-opened, SSGT Leung's team had already eradicated all nuisances at the site with thorough cleaning and disinfection, the resident added.

A 12-year-old girl from the Mainland

Upon returning home after visiting Hong Kong with her 75-year-old grandfather in March this year, the girl wrote to thank the officers for going to great lengths in helping her and her grandfather during their unscheduled three-day stay at the airport. Soon after their arrival at the airport, the elderly man was found missing from the terminal building. After receiving a report from the girl, the officers conducted a search and subsequently located the elderly man at a taxi stand at the airport. As the elderly man was suffering from senile disorder and the girl was too young to look after him, the officers liaised with the Airport Authority, airline staff and a travel services company to provide all necessary assistance for them. The girl's predicament was later compounded by some problems with her grandfather's travel document, forcing the pair to stay in the terminal building for three days. During this period, the officers paid visits, showed a lot of care and concern, and even brought them food and drinks when the girl ran out of money.

On behalf of residents of Ha Tsuen in Yuen Long, the Councillor praised the Task Force for apprehending an illegal immigrant shortly after the latter, armed with a knife, had committed a robbery in a village house. The Councillor also praised the officers for their swift response and excellent planning in their operations. He also noted that the culprit had put up a violent struggle during which a Task Force officer was injured.

The owner said he was worried about his own personal safety and that of his staff, after the light box of his saloon had been wilfully damaged and smeared with blood. After learning of the case, the officers immediately visited the saloon and looked for clues and eyewitnesses from shops and buildings in the vicinity. Subsequently, a suspect was apprehended and later brought to justice. Besides officers' swift response, the owner was also grateful for their advice on prevention of crime and harassment by triads.

US Consulate-General in HK

On April 24, a staff member of the consulate phoned APTDIST, requesting for assistance to locate an elderly American citizen, who was reported missing shortly after arriving at the Hong Kong International Airport on the previous day. As the missing person's mental age is that of a three years old, all officers on the beat were alerted and a search party was formed to comb the airport and its vicinity. About an hour later, officers spotted the missing person outside the airport, earning the consulate's praise.

Woman taxi driver

The woman taxi driver wrote to SSP T KW to thank the officers for their attitude and enthusiasm in handling her case in which her taxi was hit by a private car. She said PC Fong was well prepared when she went to his office to give statements, and PC Ko, who attended the scene of the traffic accident, had subsequently located the private car and its driver - a big help to the case. What she found most impressive was officers' teamwork she observed while giving statements. "I truly appreciate their attitude and enthusiasm. If every officer were like them, Hong Kong would shine more brightly," part of her letter said.

Following the discovery of a deceased person and police responding to the scene, SIP Lee had the unpleasant and unenviable job of informing the deceased's parents who were overseas. The parents were extremely appreciative of the compassionate and caring way that SIP Lee had handled the task. They said it was a "good job done" in trying circumstances and reflected credit on him and indeed the Force as a whole.

Malaysian married couple on visit to HK

On returning to Malaysia, the couple sent a "thank you" letter and card to the officers for recovering their handbag and camera stolen by a pickpocket while they were visiting a temple in Hong Kong. In particular, the couple was grateful to the officers for their swift action and the good arrangements they had made for them.

Overseas visitor

In a letter to the Force after leaving Hong Kong, the visitor said he and his friend were on vacation on Lamma Island last year when the ferry departed prematurely, and they had to wait for two hours for the next ferry to Hong Kong Island. On learning their predicament, the police, in particular SPC Mok, were friendly and extremely helpful, making phone calls and giving contact information for ferry service. What he had done "helped make a stressful and frustrating situation a much more calm situation with that personal and human touch that is so needed in the world's police forces," the visitor said in his letter.

Chairman of Southern District Council

Following the arrest of over 20 suspected triad members in the Southern District and students with a triad background, as well as the seizure of a large quantity of weapons and dangerous drugs, the Chairman, on behalf of the District Council, wrote to CP to thank WDIST anti-triad officers for their efforts to clamp down on growing triad activities.

The residents expressed worries that law and order problems might arise if there was a laxity in FCA management. On the other hand, the residents praised Closed Area Permits Office officers for discharging their duties and strictly adhering to the guidelines and instructions for screening applications for Closed Area Permits. Under the leadership of SIP Tam Man-hoi, the officers are meticulous with their work and serve the public with enthusiasm.

Motorist

The motorist had his car damaged in North Point, but following investigation by SIP Kong and PC Chan, two suspects were charged with criminal damage, prompting the motorist to write to praise the officers for their efficiency and sense of responsibility in handling his case.

A taxi driver found a rucksack containing a video camera, a camera, a map, sunglasses and some miscellaneous items left in his car and handed in the articles at Aberdeen Police Station. CA Lo then sent PEN messages to all report rooms and finally located the owner, a French visitor to Hong Kong, who sent a thank you postcard to Ms Lo upon his return to Paris.

The resident found her mobile phone missing while shopping in Tsuen Wan and was worrying that her personal particulars might be misused, when an officer from PTU A informed her that a suspect had been arrested and asked her to identify her property. In a letter to the police, the resident said this case boosted her confidence in the Force's efficiency.

Taxi driver

The taxi driver was assaulted by a lorry driver without any good reason in Mong Kok. On seeing this, PC Kwok, who was off duty, went to the taxi driver's aid and apprehended the assailant. After the assailant was convicted of criminal damage and assault by the court, the taxi driver wrote to DVC TSDIV, thanking PC Kwok for upholding justice.

Motorist

The motorist's car was involved in a collision with a tramcar, but due to lack of experience, he did not know how to have the accident resolved. He then called up HKI T, where PC Tong, though not being the investigating officer, went to great lengths in answering the motorist's questions about investigation procedures, civil action and law, etc. Later with the help of PC Chui, the case was resolved satisfactorily. In a letter to CP, the motorist said he takes pride in Hong Kong having very fine police officers like PCs Tong and Chui.

Association of Parents Fighting for Right of Abode in Hong Kong

In a letter to CP, the association thanked officers of PCRO CDIST for their assistance for the some 750 processions and rallies of various scales the association held to make their demands known over the past eight years. On all those occasions, the officers were very helpful, listened to association members' views and offered valuable advice, greatly relieving the association members' stress and anxiety.

The disabled person wrote to CP to thank the officers for going to great lengths in finding a parking space for him in Peak Road. The disabled person called for police assistance on finding a parking space designated for the disabled in Peak Road being illegally occupied by a private car. The officers quickly arrived at the scene, looked for another suitable parking space for the informant and then escorted him to find his family, enabling the family to spend a happy time on the Peak. The informant added that he was very impressed with the officers' outstanding services to the citizens of Hong Kong.

Estate Management Advisory Committee of Cheung Wang Estate

In a letter to DVC TYDIV, the committee said estate residents were delighted to see the crime rate of their estate continue to drop, and attributed this achievement to the police's efficiency and strong will to fight crime.

The resident was knocked off the motorcycle he was riding in a traffic accident and was lying on the ground waiting for the arrival of ambulance when Mr Regan came forward and attended to him. Mr Regan also informed the victim's wife and arranged for her to accompany her husband to hospital. In a letter to CP, the resident said Mr Regan's calm assurance and professional manner made a great difference to him and to his wife in difficult circumstances, and the conduct and the strong personal qualities that Mr Regan demonstrated are a credit to himself and to the Force.

Motorist

The motorist parked his car on a street and on the next day he found the car badly damaged, along with three other vehicles, apparently in a hit-and-run incident. Despite lack of eye-witnesses and evidence, PC Ng managed to locate the suspected offending vehicle - a mini-bus, as well as its driver, prompting the motorist to write to praise PC Ng for his thorough investigation, efficiency and dedication to duty.

The driver was very impressed with the officers' performance in attending to a bus passenger who slipped and received minor injuries on the bus. "The two officers were fair, objective, affable and professional. Shop theft victim

The victim praised the officers' efficiency in apprehending a suspect within two weeks after her cell phone was stolen in a shop.

The motorist said the officers arrived at Cotton Tree Drive, Central, minutes after a traffic accident in which he was involved had happened. Throughout their investigation at the scene, the officers were "highly efficient, professional and polite".

A businessman

The businessman's home in Hong Kong was burgled and a quantity of valuable Chinese calligraphy and gold coins was stolen, but later all the stolen articles were recovered, thanks to the officers' professional investigation. After this WPC Kwok also called on the victim to give tips on crime prevention. In a letter to CP and DC EDIST, the businessman said he was very impressed with the officers' professionalism and attitude towards their job, and saw Hong Kong as a safe world city.

The victim said she was molested and assaulted in a public rental housing estate in Tseung Kwan O, but PC Yiu quickly arrived at the scene and apprehended the assailant, setting a good example to other police officers.

Husband in a family dispute

A married couple had a heated argument at home, and the wife locked herself up inside a room for fears of being hurt. The officers quickly arrived at the scene and mediated an amicable settlement, prompting the husband to write to PHQ to praise the officers for their professionalism, good manner and communication skills in averting a "family tragedy".
