Statement by the Chief Executive's Office

Tuesday, October 28, 1997

The Chief Executive's Office made the following statement today (Tuesday) on Mr Tung Chee Hwa's decision as to whether he would stand for election to the National People's Congress and participate in relevant election work:

"After thorough consideration, the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, has decided not to stand for election to be a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress. Mr Tung felt that taking part in the election is an honour and a great responsibility which involves the need to devote a great deal of time and energy. At the moment, with the HKSAR newly established, Mr Tung wants to concentrate his efforts on SAR matters.

"Mr Tung will take part in the work of the election meeting of Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress in his capacity as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference."
