Remarks by Chief Executive after meeting Canadian Prime Minister
Sunday, November 23, 1997
Following is the transcript of remarks by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, after meeting the Prime Minister of Canada in Vancouver today (November 22, Canada time):
Mr Tung: I have just met with the Prime Minister of Canada. We have a very useful discussion. I was able to tell him about the situation after July 1, since the return of Hong Kong, how well we are doing. We also exchanged views about the financial turmoil in Asia, but both of us shared the common view that despite short-term turmoil, Asia's economy remains fundamentally strong and we are optimistic about the future. We also talked about the meeting that we will start on Monday and we look forward to good results out of the meeting and the fact that Canada being the host country has done a lot of preparatory work to ensure the meeting will be successful, thank you.
