![]() Transcript of media session by the Chief Executive
Following is the transcript of a media session given by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, after visiting the Southwest New Territories region this afternoon:
Reporter: Mr Tung, there has been some concern in recently days that some sources in Hong Kong might be prejudiced against children from the mainland. What do you think can be done about this and do you think there is any reason at all for children from the mainland to be educated separately from Hong Kong's children?
Mr Tung: First of all let me say that this is absolutely not true. There is no prejudice and the mainland children are being enrolled into schools within three weeks of their arrival and this is the policy of the Education Department, it's being implemented. Secondly, there are those who come in and the system is different and need some help and we will help them. But they are being enrolled into our school system. You might take a very close look at the results of the recent final examination. You will find many of them with a good result. They are actually new arrivals, they have done a very good job.
Reporter: Mr Tung, I would like to ask two questions. One of that is: are you likely to stand for the elections of the CPPCC? and the other is: do you think there is a need for a comprehensive review of the clinical service in the light of three incidents that....recently?
Mr Tung: On the first point that, as I said earlier on, I have no plan at present to do it. It is not a matter I have given much thought but my priority is being Hong Kong, working for Hong Kong. Insofar as the second issue you raised, as I said earlier on, Hong Kong's medical service is one of the finest in the world and we should be very proud of it. Of course, there has been accidents, mistakes could have been made and the Hospital Authority is very diligently pursuing these, investigating these and making sure that proper procedures in the future will be followed and necessary action will be taken to make sure that they won't happen again.
