Professor Pan Zi-qiang, an international expert on radiation protection, visited the Hong Kong Observatory on 14 September 2007. The Observatory took the opportunity to request Professor Pan to deliver a lecture on the latest development of radiation protection, in particular the recommendations on radiation protection newly proposed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). In addition to colleagues of the Observatory, the talk also attracted about 30 officers from 11 other government departments/organizations.
Professor Pan is the scientific advisor of the Hong Kong Observatory, the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the President of the China Radiation Protection Association. In the international arena, Professor Pan is the member of the ICRP Main Commission and the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). Professor Pan has been making important contributions to various fields such as radiation protection, health physics and environmental protection for more than 40 years. He published a number of academic essays and research reports and attained great achievements in both theoretical and practical aspects.
The lecture of Professor Pan deepened our understanding on radiation protection. His invaluable advice will be of much help to our work on radiation protection as well as emergency response in the future.
