Amidst the hustle and bustle of Tsim Sha
Tsui in which it is located, the Observatory Headquarters enjoys a serenity
completely uncharacteristic of this hectic business area. It is rich
with fauna and flora, some of which quite uncommon in Hong Kong. The
guided tour will take the visitors backward in time to trace the development
of the Observatory in the past 120 years. Visitors can see how weather forecasts
are made and how technology is put to use. They will also have a chance
to see some elegant historical buildings and appreciate the ecology
of a mini-forest in the heart of the city.
In general, tours will be arranged in two to three Saturdays every month.
Each tour will last for about two hours. Visitors will be guided by
voluntary docents of the interest group ˇ§The Friends of the Observatoryˇ¨,
who will provide explanations in Cantonese. Members of the public interested
in joining the tours can enroll on-line at the following webpage (in
Chinese). The period of on-line enrollment is ten days starting from noon on the second working day of each month. Furthermore, members of the public can also download enrollment form by clicking here and enroll the tour by mail. Please refer to the enrollment webpage or form for timetable of the tours.
Each tour is limited to 30 places. Successful applicants will be selected by drawing lots. The tours are free of charge.
Successful applicants by on-line enrollment will receive a confirmation email while successful applicants by postal application will receive a confirmation letter. Please produce the email or letter for checking upon entrance to the Observatory.
