Dear Sir/Madam,
Customer Awareness on Year 2000
The purpose of this letter
is to inform you that, as part of the HKMA' communication strategy on
the Year 2000 issue, we shall be publishing the first issue of a series
of Year 2000 leaflets for the general public at the end of June 1999.
This first issue is a joint initiative with the Hong Kong Association
of Banks, which seeks to inform the general public about Year 2000 developments
in the banking sector, and to address some frequently asked questions.
The information will, we hope, enhance public awareness of efforts made
by the banking sector to address the Year 2000 problem and help the
public to make rational decisions on the Year 2000 issue.
We intend to print a total
of around 700,000 copies of the leaflet and to make them available to
AIs free of charge for distribution to their customers. In this connection,
the two industry associations will be writing to their members separately
to set out the logistical arrangements for making effective distribution
to customers. Due to the substantial demand anticipated for this leaflet,
the HKMA will provide AIs with a camera-ready art of the leaflet upon
request, so that they may use it to produce additional copies if necessary.
The latest draft of the leaflet (English version only as the Chinese
version is still being finalised) is attached herewith for your reference.
Notwithstanding the production
of this leaflet, I would reiterate that it is your institution's responsibility
to develop and implement measures to address customer concerns on Year
2000 issues. In view of the production of this leaflet which would likely
arouse greater public interest in the Year 2000 issue, you should ensure
that your institution has developed effective measures to proactively
address customer concerns by the end of June as required by the HKMA.
In this connection, it is vital to ensure that the front line staff
of your institution are adequately trained to answer customer enquiries
on Year 2000 matters.
