Further
survey on the Year 2000 Problem
As you are aware, throughout 1997 the HKMA has taken a number of steps to raise the level of awareness of and encourage prompt action to be taken by the banking industry in resolving the Year 2000 problem. We have also been active in communicating the situation of Year 2000 compliance to the general public, to overseas regulatory authorities and to international bodies such as the Bank for International Settlements. As part of the HKMA's continuing initiative on the Year 2000 problem, we now conduct a further survey to collect information on your institution's progress with respect to the Year 2000 projects. At this stage, all authorized institutions should have begun implementation or testing of their Year 2000 changes. The results of this survey would help to highlight problem areas and identify any need to modify our supervisory approach on this issue. It is also our intention to publish the overall results of this survey to ensure that the general public and the international community continue to be kept updated on the situation. I enclose herewith a copy of the questionnaire and I would appreciate if you can complete this form with respect to your institution's position as at 31 December 1997 and return it to the HKMA by 6 February 1998. Should you have any questions on the questionnaire, please contact Mr. Edmond Lau, Head of Banking Development Division at 2878 8110 or Mr. Peter Li, Senior Manager of Banking Development Division at 2878 1651.
