PRESS WEATHER NO. 089 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)
************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 10 A.M., SEVERE TROPICAL STORM HAIKUI WAS ESTIMATED TO
BE ABOUT 570 KILOMETRES EAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 23.2
DEGREES NORTH 119.6 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 12 KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE
TAIWAN STRAIT.

ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, HAIKUI WILL MOVE
ACROSS TAIWAN STRAIT TODAY AND MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF OVER
400 KILOMETRES FROM HONG KONG. THE CHANCE OF ISSUING HIGHER
SIGNAL TODAY WILL NOT BE HIGH. HAIKUI IS EXPECTED TO MAKE
LANDFALL OVER THE COAST OF EASTERN GUANGDONG TO SOUTHERN
FUJIAN TOMORROW (5 SEPTEMBER). IT WILL THEN LIKELY MOVE
INLAND INTO EASTERN GUANGDONG AND WEAKEN GRADUALLY.
HOWEVER, THERE IS UNCERTAINTY IN THE TRACK. THE NEED FOR
ISSUANCE OF HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNAL WILL
DEPEND ON INTENSITY CHANGE OF HAIKUI AND ITS DISTANCE FROM
THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ITS SUBSIDING AIR, HONG KONG WILL BE
VERY HOT TODAY. HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE SWELLS. MEMBERS OF
THE PUBLIC ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE, AND
NOT TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS. WITH HAIKUI MOVING INTO
INLAND OF EASTERN GUANGDONG, ITS ASSOCIATED RAINBANDS WILL
AFFECT THE COASTAL AREAS IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.
