PRESS WEATHER NO. 060 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)
************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE NO. 8 SOUTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER.

AT 5 A.M., SEVERE TROPICAL STORM MA-ON WAS CENTRED ABOUT
200 KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.0 DEGREES
NORTH 112.9 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 28 KILOMETRES PER HOUR IN THE
GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE COAST OF WESTERN GUANGDONG.

MA-ON BEGINS TO MOVE AWAY FROM HONG KONG. HOWEVER, GALES
ARE STILL AFFECTING MANY PLACES IN THE TERRITORY AND WINDS
ON HIGH GROUND OCCASIONALLY REACH STORM FORCE. MEANWHILE,
SHOWERS ASSOCIATED WITH MA-ON WILL OCCASIONALLY BRING GALES
TO THE TERRITORY. NO. 8 GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS EXPECTED TO
REMAIN IN FORCE BEFORE 9 A.M. TODAY. LOCAL WINDS ARE
EXPECTED TO WEAKEN GRADUALLY BEFORE NOON. DEPENDING ON THE
CHANGES IN LOCAL WINDS, THE OBSERVATORY WILL ASSESS THE
NEED FOR ISSUING STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 TO REPLACE THE
NO. 8 GALE OR STORM SIGNAL.

SEAS WILL BE VERY ROUGH WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE, AND NOT TO
ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF STORM SURGE AND ASTRONOMICAL HIGH
TIDE, WATER LEVELS OVER THE TERRITORY ARE GENERALLY RISING.
A HIGH WATER LEVEL OF AROUND 3 METRES ABOVE CHART DATUM IS
EXPECTED AT QUARRY BAY IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THE HIGH
WATER LEVEL MAY CAUSE FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS. YOU
SHOULD AVOID GOING TO LIKELY AFFECTED LOW-LYING AREAS AND
STAY AWAY FROM DANGEROUS PLACES.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
NGONG PING, WAGLAN ISLAND AND CHEUNG CHAU WERE 93, 86 AND
82 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS 144, 103 AND 100
KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
