TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE NO. 8 SOUTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER.

AT 7 P.M., TROPICAL STORM LIONROCK WAS CENTRED ABOUT 520
KILOMETRES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 20.0 DEGREES
NORTH 109.8 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTHWEST
SLOWLY INTO BEIBU WAN.

THE BROAD OUTER RAINBANDS ASSOCIATED WITH LIONROCK ARE
AFFECTING THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY AND ARE
EXPECTED TO PERSIST FOR SOME TIME. UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF
THE RAINBANDS, STRONG TO GALE FORCE WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO
PREVAIL OVER HONG KONG, WITH OCCASIONAL STORM FORCE WINDS
ON HIGH GROUND OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN PART OF THE TERRITORY.
AS A RESULT, THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL, NO. 8 WILL REMAIN IN
FORCE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN LOCAL WINDS SHOW SIGNS
OF MODERATION, THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER ISSUING THE
STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 TO REPLACE THE GALE OR STORM
SIGNAL, NO. 8. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE ADVISED TO TAKE
NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETIN BEFORE LEAVING HOME
TOMORROW MORNING (10 OCTOBER).

STORM SURGE INDUCED BY LIONROCK AND HEAVY RAIN MAY LEAD TO
FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD
CONTINUE TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FLOODING. BESIDES,
SEAS WILL BE ROUGH WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE, AND NOT TO ENGAGE IN
WATER SPORTS.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
NGONG PING, CHEUNG CHAU AND TAP MUN WERE 109, 85 AND 82
KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS 134, 102 AND 111
KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
