TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
 
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
 
THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
 
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.
 
AT 5 P.M., TROPICAL STORM NANGKA WAS CENTRED ABOUT 530
KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 18.7 DEGREES NORTH
110.9 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 20 KILOMETRES PER HOUR TOWARDS
HAINAN ISLAND.


 
NANGKA IS ABOUT TO MAKE LANDFALL AT HAINAN ISLAND.  WITH
NANGKA WEAKENING AFTER MAKING LANDFALL AND MOVING FURTHER
AWAY FROM HONG KONG, THE LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO WEAKEN
GRADUALLY. DEPENDING ON THE LOCAL WIND CONDITIONS, THE
OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER ISSUING THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL,
NO. 3 BETWEEN 6 P.M. AND 8 P.M. THIS AFTERNOON.
 
THE RAIN BANDS ASSOCIATED WITH NANGKA ARE AFFECTING THE
PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. THERE WILL BE SWELLS AND VERY ROUGH
SEAS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM
THE SHORELINE AND NOT TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.


 
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
WAGLAN ISLAND, GREEN ISLAND AND TATE'S CAIRN WERE 78, 68
AND 59 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING 91,
86 AND 83 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
