TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.

AT NOON, TROPICAL STORM NANGKA WAS CENTRED ABOUT 490
KILOMETRES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 18.5 DEGREES
NORTH 111.7 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 22 KILOMETRES PER HOUR TOWARDS THE
VICINITY OF HAINAN ISLAND AND INTENSIFY GRADUALLY.

UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF NANGKA AND THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON, GALE FORCE WINDS ARE AFFECTING THE OFFSHORE WATERS
AND THE HIGH GROUND IN THE TERRITORY. WINDS ARE GENERALLY
STRONGER OVER THE SOUTHERN PART OF HONG KONG. WITH NANGKA
MOVING TO THE SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG, LOCAL WIND DIRECTION
WILL GRADUALLY CHANGE FROM NORTHEAST TO EAST TO SOUTHEAST.
AREAS WHICH ARE PREVIOUSLY SHELTERED MAY BECOME EXPOSED.
MEANWHILE, THE RAIN BANDS ASSOCIATED WITH NANGKA ARE MOVING
NORTHWARDS AND WILL AFFECT THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY AFTER
NOON TODAY. THERE WILL STILL BE A THREAT OF GALE FORCE
WINDS TO HONG KONG FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THE CHANCE OF
CHANGING TO THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 BEFORE 4 P.M.
TODAY IS RELATIVELY LOW.

THERE WILL BE SWELLS AND VERY ROUGH SEAS. MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND NOT
TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.
