TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
 
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
 
THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 IS IN FORCE.
 
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 41 TO 62
KILOMETRES PER HOUR ARE EXPECTED.
 
AT 11 P.M., THE TROPICAL STORM NANGKA WAS ESTIMATED TO BE
ABOUT 470 KILOMETRES SOUTH OF HONG KONG (NEAR 18.1 DEGREES
NORTH 114.3 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 22 KILOMETRES PER HOUR IN THE
GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE VICINITY OF HAINAN ISLAND AND
INTENSIFY GRADUALLY.


 
ACCORDING TO THE CURRENT FORECAST TRACK, NANGKA WILL BE
CLOSEST TO HONG KONG TOMORROW MORNING (13 OCTOBER),
SKIRTING WITHIN ABOUT 500 KILOMETRES TO THE SOUTH OF HONG
KONG. TOGETHER WITH THE COMBINED EFFECT WITH THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON, LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO STRENGTHEN GRADUALLY.
DEPENDING ON THE LOCAL WIND CONDITION, THE OBSERVATORY WILL
CONSIDER ISSUING THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL NO. 8 BEFORE DAWN
TOMORROW MORNING. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD TAKE NOTE OF
THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETIN BEFORE DEPARTING HOME TOMORROW
MORNING.
 
LOCAL WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO DETERIORATE SIGNIFICANTLY
TOMORROW. SHOWERS WILL BECOME MORE FREQUENT AND SEAS WILL
BE VERY ROUGH WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE
ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND NOT TO ENGAGE
IN WATER SPORTS.


 
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
WAGLAN ISLAND WERE 60 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM
GUSTS EXCEEDING 68 KILOMETRES PER HOUR.

IN LOW-LYING AREAS SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FLOODING.
 
3. AVOID STAYING IN AREAS EXPOSED TO HIGH WINDS. DRIVERS
USING HIGHWAYS AND FLYOVERS SHOULD BE ALERT TO VIOLENT
GUSTS.
 
4. SMALL VESSELS NOT YET IN TYPHOON SHELTERS SHOULD SEEK
SHELTER WITHOUT DELAY. USE HEAVY ANCHORS AND CHECK THAT ALL
DECK FITTINGS ARE FIRMLY FASTENED.
