LCSD's "Embracing the Heritage of Cantonese Music" Yu Qiwei and His Protégés in Concert to showcase essence of Cantonese music
******************************************************************************************
Under the theme of "legacy and inheritance", the concerts relate to the core of keeping the artistry alive by musicians as well as the legacy of Cantonese music. The programme of the two concerts includes familiar classical tunes "In Celebration of Good Times" and "The Flower Fair in Spring", while different selected music pieces with special characteristics will be performed in each concert. All-time classics, namely "Birds Returning to the Woods", "Lovers' Sorrow" and "A Hungry Horse Shaking Its Bells", will be featured in the first concert at Sha Tin Town Hall while "Spring Comes to the Fields", "The Toll of the Temple Bell" and "Autumn Moon in the Han Palace" will be performed in the second concert at Hong Kong City Hall, where the world premiere of a commissioned work by contemporary composer Clarence Mak, "Butterflies along the Waterworks" will also be featured. Audiences can experience the charm of both the traditional and modern Lingnan culture through the mellifluous melodies.
In the concerts, Yu will perform in various ensembles of Chinese and Western instruments with his students, such as huqin recitalists Chan Pik-sum and Chan Kai-him, who are both active in Chinese and Western musical genres in the city. Also performing at the concert are special guests including National Class One Musician and guzheng virtuoso Xu Lingzi, well-known yangqin recitalist Peng Yanzhen, renowned pianist Cheng Wai and young cellist Tan Cong.
Being a National Class One Musician in gaohu, Yu is a paragon of contemporary Cantonese music. Over the years, he has garnered many accolades, including the "Artist of the Year (Music)" at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2015. During his 18 years of service as the Head of Chinese Music at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Yu has groomed many outstanding young musicians in the field of Chinese music in Hong Kong and received recognition for his artistic achievements.
