LegCo Public Accounts Committee visits Kwai Chung Park and Wan Po Road Pet Garden (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Public Accounts Committee (PAC) today (May 26) conducted a visit to the Kwai Chung Park and Wan Po Road Pet Garden to better understand the development of government recreational facilities at restored landfills.

Accompanied by representatives of various government departments including the Audit Commission, the Environmental Protection Department, the Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Architectural Services Department, Members first visited the Kwai Chung Park and were briefed on the development plan of the Park.  Members also visited the Leachate Treatment Facilities at Gin Drinkers Bay Landfill. Members learnt that the Kwai Chung Park, covering an area of about 25.5 hectares, was formerly the Gin Drinkers Bay Landfill. Up to the present, except the BMX park of 3.9 hectares which had been opened for public use, the remaining Park site had not been opened for public use since the completion of restoration works in September 2000.

Members then visited the Wan Po Road Pet Garden, which was formerly the Tseung Kwan O Stage I Landfill, to observe its facilities.  Members noted that the continuous ground settlement at the project site was unusual.

Members considered that the visit was very useful for them to better understand the issues raised in Chapter 1 of the Director of Audit's Report No. 70 on "Management of restored landfills".  The Report is available at the following website:
www.legco.gov.hk/yr17-18/english/counmtg/papers/cm20180425-sp099-e.pdf.

Members who participated in the visit were the Chairman of PAC, Mr Abraham Shek; Deputy Chairman of PAC, Mr Kenneth Leung; and PAC member Ms Tanya Chan.
