The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, visited Wan Chai District today (March 28). He met with ethnic minority students and children receiving residential care services, before meeting with members of the Wan Chai District Council (WCDC).

Accompanied by the District Officer (Wan Chai), Mr Rick Chan, and the Chairman of the WCDC, Mr Stephen Ng, Mr Chan first visited Li Sing Tai Hang School and chatted with ethnic minority students to know more about their learning experiences. Li Sing Tai Hang School, a government-aided primary school, has admitted non-Chinese speaking students since 2003. The school has designed a Chinese language curriculum to cater for needs of the students to enable them to learn Chinese efficiently and in an enjoyable manner.

Mr Chan said that there are some 250 000 people from ethnic minorities in Hong Kong and the Government always strives to encourage and facilitate their integration into society. A total of $500 million has been earmarked in the Budget this year to strengthen support for ethnic minorities.

Mr Chan then went to Po Leung Kuk to understand more about the social services it provides, including the residential child care services. He said that as announced in the 2018-19 Budget, the Government will allocate a total of about $220 million to strengthen care for children and disadvantaged youths.

Before concluding the visit, Mr Chan met with members of the WCDC to exchange views on various livelihood and development issues of the district.
