TAC discusses proposal on duration of ferry service licences and HK Tramways Ltd's application for fare increases
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Transport Advisory Committee:

The Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) was briefed on the Government's proposal to relax the cap on the period of newly granted licences for ferry services and that on the period of each licence extension at a meeting today (March 27). The TAC also discussed the fare increase application from Hong Kong Tramways Limited (HKT).

The TAC Chairman, Mr Larry Kwok, said, "Members welcome the Government's proposal to amend the Ferry Services Ordinance, in order to relax the cap on the period of newly granted licences and also that on the period of each licence extension, from not exceeding three years to not exceeding five years, with the aggregate licence period remaining capped at 10 years. Members hope to see that the Government's proposed legislative amendments, if passed by the Legislative Council, will encourage ferry operators to make necessary longer-term planning and investment, with a view to promoting quality and sustainable ferry services for the citizens."

In addition, Members of the TAC discussed the fare increase application from HKT. "Members note the operation and financial status of the HKT. In deliberating HKT's fare increase application, Members have considered and balanced all relevant factors, including the financial viability, proposed improvement projects and public acceptability," Mr Kwok said.

The TAC will submit its recommendation to the Government for consideration by the Chief Executive in Council.
