EPD calls for public and commercial and industrial organisations to recycle peach blossom trees
******************************************************************************************
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (March 1) called on members of the public and commercial and industrial (C&I) organisations to deliver peach blossom trees (PBTs) to designated collection points for recycling. The EPD's contractor will process the collected PBTs into useful recycled materials, such as mulches and compost, for gardening purposes to promote the reduction of yard waste.

Members of the public are encouraged to deliver the PBTs with decorations removed to the 37 Public Refuse Collection Points and six Outlying Islands Transfer Facilities from March 2 to 5. Please refer to Annex for the locations and opening hours of collection points.

C&I organisations, such as property management companies and cleaning companies, and members of the public can deliver the PBTs to the Baguio plant nursery in Ting Kok Road, Tai Po on the specified dates from 9am to 9pm.

C&I organisations are requested to contact the EPD's contractor (Tel: 9706 6549) before delivering the PBTs to the plant nursery. The contractor will also issue a recycling receipt upon request. For more details and form, please refer to the Hong Kong Waste Reduction website. (www.wastereduction.gov.hk/en/pbtree_recycling_2018.htm)

An EPD spokesman reminded the public of the importance of "recycle right" and the need for clean recycling. All decorations, fai-chun and tapes etc should be removed before the PBTs are delivered to the collection points. For other small potted plants (such as kumquat trees), the public are advised to replant them to follow the "use less, waste less" principle.

In order to promote recycling of yard waste left over after Christmas and the Lunar New Year, since 2016 the EPD has followed the prevailing government procurement procedures to engage a qualified contractor with relevant experience and the capability to carry out proper collection and treatment services for natural Christmas trees (NCTs) and PBTs and subsequent processing into materials suitable for recycling or reuse. The contractor has properly recycled and converted the collected NCTs and PBTs into compost, bulking agents, wood pellets and other useful materials. The processed materials and end products have been donated for use by education, social and charity organisations, as well as agricultural organisations.

The EPD welcomes other organisations and associations to provide recycling services for PBTs to help the public and the C&I organisations to participate and contribute to waste reduction for the community.
