Cyber Security Competition 2017 (With photos)

     A total of 95 winners of the Cyber Security Competition 2017 were presented with 137 awards at Cyberport today (February 10) for their outstanding performance in the cyber security knowledge competition.

     Police Director of Crime and Security, Mr Li Chi-hang, the Government Chief Information Officer, Ir Allen Yeung and the Director of Centre for Information Security and Cryptography, Department of Computer Science, the University of Hong Kong, Dr KP Chow officiated at the award presentation ceremony and presented awards to the winners.

     Mr Li said at the ceremony that the number of technology crimes increased from 2,206 cases in 2011 to 6,862 cases in 2015, with an upsurge of losses from $140 million to nearly $1.83 billion. In response to the recent changes in the criminal patterns of technology crimes and their increasing impact on the society, the Police Force set up the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau in early 2015 to target against such crimes. Since then, the number of technology crime cases dropped significantly to 5,567 cases in 2017, showing a remarkable decrease of 20 per cent.

     Mr Li added that the competition with the theme of “Cyber Security Starts From Youth”, aims to encourage youngsters to make use of the knowledge they gained in the competition and remind their families and friends to stay alert to cyber security risks.

     The Cyber Security Competition 2017 is organised by the Police Force and the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong. The competition consists of three categories, namely the Primary School Division, Secondary School Division and Tertiary Student Division, attracting almost 7,700 participants. The competition includes online quiz, presentation on topics related to cyber security, and multiple cyber security challenges in a controlled computer environment.
