Young musicians from Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou to perform "Embracing the Duality of Cantonese Music" concerts

Led by young musicians Yu Lefu and Chan Pik-sum, the ensemble will present the "duality of Cantonese music" as advocated by Master Yu Qiwei, which embraces both modern and traditional Cantonese music. Yu and Chan will play alongside Zhang Yueru, the concertmaster of the Macao Chinese Orchestra, in what promises to be an impressive huqin performance. They will be joined by Yeung Wai-kit, Sha Jingshan, Bryan Lai, Cheung Wai-lok, Yanki Ma, Tong Shaomin, Yin Yu and Liang Jia.
The programme of the first performance will include "In Celebration of Good Times", "Selling Groceries", "Precious Ducks Swimming Across the Lotus", "Orioles Singing among the Billowing Willows", "The Lament of Lady Zhaojun" and "Dreaming of Falling Snow" (Hong Kong premiere). The performance will be staged at 8pm on March 29 (Thursday) at the Theatre of Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre. Tickets are priced at $160 and $240.
The programme of the second performance will include "Gung Ce Ho Si Saan", "Singing Koels in Mount Parker", "Morning Flower and Evening Moon", "Sky with Falling Petals", "Song of the Full Moon" and "The Toll of the Temple Bell". The performance will be staged at 8pm on March 30 (Friday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre. Tickets are priced at $160 and $240.
Yu Lefu has performed as lead musician extensively in the Mainland and overseas with the South Sound Cantonese Music Group. He is also the artistic director, guitarist and composer of the rock band Chui Ball Tong. Chan Pik-sum is actively engaged in the Chinese, Western and pop music community. She has been the concertmaster of a number of orchestras and toured many countries in Asia and Europe. A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Zhang Yueru currently teaches erhu at the Macao Conservatory.

A lecture demonstration entitled "Exploring the Notion of Performance in Cantonese Music" (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 7.30pm on March 28 (Wednesday) at AC1, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The speakers and demonstrators will be Yu Lefu, Yeung Wai-kit, Chan Pik-sum, Sha Jingshan, Yanki Ma and Tong Shaomin. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
