SLW extends warm wishes and early Lunar New Year greetings to elderly (with photos)
***********************************************************************************
The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Dr Law Chi-kwong, visited Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre (Sham Shui Po) today (February 6) to extend early Lunar New Year greetings to the elderly and offer his care and warm wishes amid the recent cold spell.

Accompanied by the Senior Social Work Supervisor of Services for the Elderly of Caritas Hong Kong, Mr Lai Sau-man, and the District Social Welfare Officer (Sham Shui Po), Ms Wendy Chau, Dr Law was first briefed on the services of the centre. As a District Elderly Community Centre (DECC) subvented by the Social Welfare Department (SWD), the centre works with elderly service units in the district to serve elderly persons and their carers to enable them to live actively in the community. Apart from providing social networking and various support services, the centre also operates Support Teams for the Elderly (STE) to reach out to vulnerable elderly persons, particularly those who live alone or are relatively frail.

Dr Law toured the centre to observe its wide range of activities, including an interest class for elderly with mild dementia, a class for elderly volunteers and a training course for social workers responsible for elderly counselling services. He said that the Dementia Community Support Scheme would be regularised and extended to all 41 DECCs across the territory to provide support services for the elderly with mild or moderate dementia and their carers at the district level through a medical-social collaboration model, with the aim of enhancing community health using a cross-sectoral and multi-disciplinary approach. Apart from caring for the frail elderly, Dr Law said that the Government would continue to promote active ageing through various programmes such as the Opportunities for the Elderly Project, age-friendly community projects and the Elder Academy Scheme, with a view to encouraging elderly persons to remain active and healthy.

During the visit, Dr Law sang with elderly volunteers who work as ambassadors for local tours organised by the centre. Dr Law also presented mandarins to all centre members to wish them a happy Lunar New Year, and reminded the elderly to take precautionary measures in the cold weather before concluding his visit. He also appealed to staff and volunteers to pay extra attention to single elderly persons and the chronically ill, and thanked them for their dedication in serving the elderly.
