*******************************************************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (February 6) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Jao Tsung-i.

Mr Lau said, "Professor Jao was a role model for many due to his lifelong devotion in advocating Chinese scholarship, and we should learn from his persistence in pursuing knowledge. I have long held the highest respect for Professor Jao, and I express my deepest condolences to his family."

Professor Jao was an outstanding figure. He was widely regarded as a maestro of Chinese scholarship. He was highly respected for his remarkable achievements in various fields including academia, culture and the arts.

Upholding the principle of "amalgamation of scholarship and art", he made tremendous contributions to academic development. He taught at various universities and even after retiring he continued tutoring postgraduate students, giving lectures and delivering speeches. He was also keen on promoting cultural development in Hong Kong, including donating his calligraphy works and paintings to academic and cultural organisations for exhibition in order to enrich the local cultural scene.
