Guzheng artist Rao Ningxin to perform "Quintessence of Hakka, Chaozhou and Cantonese Music" concerts

     Audiences will be able to enjoy a taste of Guangdong music with flavours of Hakka, Chaozhou and Cantonese at two “Quintessence of Hakka, Chaozhou and Cantonese Music” concerts in March. Both performances are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department as part of its Guangdong Music Series.
 
     The programme for the first performance includes "The Lotus Rising from the Water", "Liu Qingniang" (heavy six mode), "The Moon Rises High" (heavy six mode), "The Toll of the Temple Bell" and "United We Go". The performance will be staged at 8pm on March 9 (Friday) at the Theatre of Sheung Wan Civic Centre. Tickets are priced at $160 and $260.
                                           
     The programme for the second performance includes "Night Rain on Plantain-framed Windows", "Fish Hawks Dabbling in the Water", "The Pink Lotus" (four chuandiao) and "Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake". The performance will be staged at 8pm on March 10 (Saturday) at the Theatre of Yau Ma Tei Theatre. Tickets are priced at $160 and $260.
 
     Acclaimed as a guzheng virtuoso and educator as well as being Vice Chairman of the Guzheng Society of the Chinese Musicians Association, Professor Rao Ningxin will play authentic Hakka music for the audiences. Rao Shuhang, son of Professor Rao, who is currently the visiting associate professor at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, will perform Cantonese music on the guzheng, while Chen Junhui, currently Deputy Head of the Music Research Centre of the Culture and Art Research Institute of Guangdong Province will play Chaozhou guzheng.
 
     Three acclaimed musicians have also been invited to perform at the concerts, namely dongxiao virtuoso Tam Po-shek, who is well known for making xiao as well as playing them; Lei Yeying, China's the first gaohu artist to hold a Master's degree in Performance and Teaching; and National Class One Composer, Wang Peiyu, who is also a virtuoso of Chaozhou and Shantou music.
