HK Electric sub-contractor convicted for illegal disposal of construction waste
*******************************************************************************
The sub-contractor for the construction works of Hongkong Electric Company Limited (HK Electric), which illegally deposited construction waste in Kennedy Town, was fined a total of $15,000 by Eastern Magistrates’ Courts today (January 31) for contravening the Waste Disposal Ordinance (WDO).

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) received a report from a member of the public last April that construction waste had been deposited on the pavement at Ka Wai Man Road in Kennedy Town. Upon inspection, EPD staff found that the construction waste originated from the power cable laying works of HK Electric at High Street in Sai Ying Pun. After investigation and gathering sufficient evidence, the EPD initiated prosecution against the responsible sub-contractor.

The spokesman reminded those responsible for the management of construction works, contractors, sub-contractors and people handling construction waste that they should dispose of waste properly in accordance with the law. Reusable materials or waste with recycling value should be collected by recyclers, while non-recyclable waste should be delivered to appropriate waste disposal facilities, such as public fill reception facilities or landfills.

Under the WDO, it is an offence for anyone to dispose of waste at public places. First-time offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and six months' imprisonment.
