Film Archive's "Morning Matinee" to feature films of celebrity couples (with photos)
************************************************************************************
With the Western and Chinese Valentine's Days approaching, the Hong Kong Film Archive of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present "That Little Thing Called Love" in the romance-filled February and March, screening six films themed on love and marriage and featuring collaborations of celebrity pairings in the "Morning Matinee" series at 11am on Fridays.

In the comedy "Miracle in Chasing" (1969), Lee Ching and Yung Siu-yi intend to match the honest bachelor Chow Chung and the shy Chan Chai-chung. But Chow is a novice in the art of romance and sparks a chain of misunderstandings with Chan. Real-life couple Lee and Yung, who had been together for more than 20 years when the film was made, are credible in advising on the dos and don'ts of relationships on-screen.

Wong Man-lei doesn't get along well with the family next door in "Dear Love" (1959), but her son Cheung Ying falls in love with the neighbour's daughter Ha Ping. Facing the opposition of their parents, the couple and their friends adopt extraordinary means to win their parents' blessings. Though playing a hard-headed mother who wants to separate the lovers, Wong off the screen enjoyed a happy marriage with the film's producer, Tse Yik-chi. A post-screening talk will be held with film scholar Dr Chan Kim-mui as speaker.

Director Ng Wui partnered with his wife Yip Ping in "The Newlyweds" (1953) to showcase the truths beneath a happy marriage and thereby tell the audience to treasure their loved ones. The film centres on newlyweds Cheung Ying and Pak Yin, while Pak's cousin, played by Yip, has long been worried about Pak's financial well-being. To save face, Cheung multiplies his salary shown on a statement and takes up a part-time job to earn extra. Pak also wants to find a job but unfortunately runs into a conman.

"The Diary of a Husband, Part Two" (1964) follows the happy couple of Cheung Ying-choi and Nam Hung, who have one son after their marriage. Later, Cheung's childless uncle demands that Cheung marry a second wife to bring him a baby and the friends of the couple use all means to prevent the proposal from happening. Actresses like Nam Hung, Lee Hong-kum and Helena Law look stunning and give lively and entertaining performances in the film. Director Chor Yuen tied the knot with Nam Hung three years after the film's release.

"The Judge Goes to Pieces" (1948) features Ma Si-tsang as a famed attorney who has decided to give up his career in exchange for a more blessed life. His wife Hung Sin Nui has sympathy for a wronged widow and tries every trick up her sleeve to get Ma, now a merchant, to do his old job again. But the case becomes complicated unexpectedly. Cantonese opera greats Hung Sin Nui and Ma Si-tsang were perfect partners both on and off the screen. Their quick wit and rapid-fire repartee set a remarkable example of a lovely fighting couple.

Cheung Ying in "Battle of the Sexes" (1959) is a flawless husband who takes care of the wife of a deceased friend, Mui Yee. When his generosity is turned into others' gossip, Cheung's wife Tsi Lo Lin demands a divorce as she mistakes the rumour as the truth. Though no longer a couple by the time the film was made, Cheung and Mui continued to display effortless chemistry together on-screen.

All the films are in Cantonese and without subtitles.
