Major Sports Events Committee holds Workshop on Engagement in Sponsorship for Major Sports Events (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Major Sports Events Committee:

The Major Sports Events Committee (MSEC) under the Sports Commission held the Workshop on Engagement in Sponsorship for Major Sports Events today (January 20) at the Race Village of the Volvo Ocean Race - Hong Kong Stopover at the Kai Tak Runway Park. The workshop provided a platform for companies and the local sports sector to establish connections and discuss their experiences in sponsoring and organising major sports events, enhancing the commercial sector's understanding of "M" Mark events.

The MSEC aimed to further encourage sponsorship for more major sports events from the commercial sector through the workshop to promote Hong Kong as a prime destination for hosting major international sports events and to provide an opportunity for companies to establish a healthy and vibrant corporate brand, thereby achieving a win-win situation.

The Chairman of the MSEC, Mr Karl Kwok, said at the workshop that the MSEC has set up a core sponsor group with an aim of providing a channel for companies to make contributions to local major sports events. There are over 100 companies in the core sponsor group. Looking ahead, the MSEC will continue to encourage more companies to join the group through different channels to support national sports associations (NSAs) to organise more major sports events in Hong Kong.

The Commissioner for Sports, Mr Yeung Tak-keung, also said that apart from the policy support and resources given by the Government, the support from the commercial sector is also very important for the continuous sports development in Hong Kong. If companies could provide sponsorship and assist in promotion of sports events, it would not only facilitate the organisation of sports events of a larger scale, allowing more members of public to take part in them, but also enable companies to fulfil their corporate social responsibility, benefiting the sports sector, the athletes and the general public, achieving an all-win situation.

The Regional Head of Corporate Affairs and Brand & Marketing in Greater China & North Asia of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong), Mr Esmond Mok; the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Rugby Union, Mr Robbie McRobbie; and the Company Director of Mayo and Calder, Mr Thomas Mayo, also spoke at the workshop to share their experiences in organising or sponsoring major sports events. A tour of the Race Village was arranged for all participants of the workshop.

The "M" Mark System was launched in 2004 to help local NSAs organise more major sports events and nurture them into sustainable undertakings.
