SCS recognises efforts of student interns of Shine Skills Centre (with photos)
******************************************************************************
The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Joshua Law, today (January 19) presented certificates to students of the Shine Skills Centre of the Vocational Training Council who participated in a government internship scheme. He also encouraged them to unleash their potential at workplaces after graduation.

The Civil Service Bureau (CSB) arranged an eight-week internship programme for 28 students of the Shine Skills Centre at 17 government bureaux and departments from October last year.

Meeting with students of the Shine Skills Centre who have completed the internship, Mr Law said the Chief Executive announced in the Policy Address that the Government would substantially increase the number of internship places for students with disabilities to 100 in 2018 to allow more young persons with disabilities to gain hands-on work experience through placement in the Government, thereby strengthening their competitiveness before they entered the workforce.

To enhance the internship scheme, the CSB will also arrange for interns to take up more diversified jobs in addition to increasing the number of placements, Mr Law added.

Miss Cheryl Chan, Mr Jason Lee and Mr Samuel Mui were three of the interns who were mainly tasked to assist in clerical work in departments.

Miss Chan thanked her colleagues for their guidance and support, allowing her to learn step by step. She said that the internship scheme had furnished her with precious learning opportunities. She planned to apply for the post of Clerical Assistant after graduation.

Not only did the students gain hands-on work experience through the internship scheme, but they were also given opportunities to learn to communicate and get along with others. Although the internship period lasted only eight weeks, Mr Lee established friendship with his colleagues and they decided to participate in the upcoming Hong Kong Marathon together.

Apart from taking up their daily duties, the interns also had chances to take part in different events. Posted to the Chief Executive's Office, Mr Mui was assigned to assist in receiving visitors during the open day of Government House and taking photos for them. He said that the experience of serving members of the public direct was unforgettable for him.

Government colleagues who supervised the interns praised them for their positive and responsible work attitude. They said that the students with disabilities were equally competent when they took up suitable jobs.

The CSB has launched the internship scheme for local undergraduate students with disabilities and students of the Shine Skills Centre since 2016 to enable them to gain work experience, and to allow civil service colleagues to have more opportunities to better appreciate the talents and potential of persons with disabilities.
