Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhou musicians to perform "A Century of Cantonese Music" concerts

     The Cantonese Music and Song Art Troupe will join forces with virtuosi from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhou to give two performances in the "A Century of Cantonese Music" concerts in March. Two concerts are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department as part of its Guangdong Music Series.

     The first performance is entitled "Cantonese Music Gala Guangdong, Hong Kong and Shanghai" Concert. Three virtuosi of Cantonese music - Li Canxiang from Guangzhou, Li Zhaofang from Shanghai and Yu Qiwei from Hong Kong - will play alongside the Cantonese Music and Song Art Troupe to perform representative works of Cantonese music. The programme will include "The Peacock in Its Full Glory", "Thunder in a Drought", "Intoxicated under the Moon", "Lion Rolling a Ball", "Fiery Trees and Silver Flowers" and "Birds Returning to the Woods". The performance will be staged at 8pm on March 15 (Thursday) at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets are priced from $160 to $300.

     The second performance is entitled "Celebrating a Century of Cantonese Music and Songs" Concert. Chen Lingyu, a National Class One Performer and master of playing on the pipa while singing, and Pan Qianqian, a renowned gaohu and guzheng player and a highly accomplished singer in Cantonese operatic songs, will collaborate with the Cantonese Music and Song Art Troupe to perform Cantonese music classics of the past century including works of spirit music with non-traditional instruments such as the ukulele and the saxophone. The programme will include "The Dragon Boat Race", "Orioles Singing among the Billowing Willows", "Tears of Red Candle", "Auspicious Signs", "When the Sword and the Hairpin Reunite", "Fish Frolic in the Water in Spring" and "Joyous Celebrations". The performance will be staged at 8pm on March 16 (Friday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets are priced from $140 to $260.

     Two lectures entitled "Cantonese Music in Hong Kong" and "Music and Vocal Performance in Cantonese Tunes" (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 7.30pm on February 28 (Wednesday) and March 7 (Wednesday) at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum. The speakers will be Professor Yu Siu-wah and Victor Cheng. Tickets are priced at $50 for each lecture.

     A pre-concert talk entitled "History of the Cantonese Music" (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 7.30pm on March 14 (Wednesday) at AC2, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The speakers will be Li Canxiang and Li Zhaofang. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
