Exhibitions and multicultural festival with poon choi feast among highlights of 20th anniversary celebration (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
An exhibition on silver and a show featuring flowers, birds, insects and fish, as well as a multicultural festival with a poon choi feast, will be held in the coming days as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Curated by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and co-organised with the Home Affairs Bureau and the Guangdong Museum, the exhibition "The Silver Age: Origins and Trade of Chinese Export Silver" will be held at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum from December 19 (Tuesday) to February 25 next year. Around 200 exquisite exhibits have been sourced from the Guangdong Museum, the HSBC Archives, the Hong Kong Museum of History, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and a number of prominent local collectors.

Silver has been linked to the global economy, maritime trade and international relations as a currency since the early days. Its value was further reinforced during the age of great voyages in the 15th century. Wares made of this rare metal triggered East-West cultural and technical exchange of handicrafts between countries and regions.

The exhibition is divided into six sections, namely "Global Maritime Trade", "Making of Chinese Silver", "Export Silver", "Workshops in Treaty Ports", "From Canton to Hong Kong" and "East Meets West: Table Etiquette". For visitors wanting to learn more about the origins of Chinese export silver, Hong Kong as a trading hub of export silver during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century and Hong Kong's close relationship with other silver manufacturing centres in China, there will be a talk, a curator's tour and a workshop in January next year. For details, please visit www.hkmaritimemuseum.org/eng/whats-on/calendar-of-events/79/.

The opening hours of the exhibition will be 9.30am to 5.30pm on Monday to Friday, and 10am to 7pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. It will be closed on the first two days of Chinese New Year.

The admission fees are as follows:
  • Adults: $30
  • Seniors, students (over 18) and persons with disabilities (accompanied by a carer): $15
  • Children (under 18): Free (until December 31); $15 (from January 1 onwards)
