TD campaign promotes commercial vehicle drivers' safe driving and health awareness (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Commissioner for Transport, Ms Mable Chan, today (December 15) called for commercial vehicle drivers and other transport trade members to continue to participate in the activities of the Safe Driving and Health Campaign, which aims to raise professional drivers' awareness of safe driving and maintaining good health to enhance road safety.

Speaking at a ceremony in support of the ongoing campaign, Ms Chan said that improper driving habits were the major causes of traffic accidents, adding that there were some 16 000 deaths and casualties in traffic accidents in the first 10 months of this year, and about 64 per cent of them were related to commercial vehicles. The driving attitudes and habits of commercial vehicle drivers are therefore of concern.

She also appealed to drivers to at all times stay alert to and respect other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, and exercise patience when people with disabilities and the elderly are crossing the roads.

Moreover, Ms Chan also pointed out that the Government attaches great importance to combating drink driving and drug driving and has been taking stringent enforcement actions. Although there was a notable downward trend of the number of arrests last year relating to these two offences, the Government will continue to enhance its publicity work to heighten the vigilance of drivers.

This is the ninth consecutive year that the Transport Department (TD) has organised the Safe Driving and Health Campaign. The campaign aims to promote road safety by enhancing safe driving and health awareness among commercial vehicle drivers through a series of promotional activities.

The campaign this year has four main themes: observing good driving attitudes, respecting other road users, not driving after drinking or taking drugs, and maintaining good health at all times.

Commercial vehicle drivers can enjoy free health check-ups at designated medical centres in the territory through participation in the campaign. In addition, the TD will continue to disseminate road safety messages to commercial vehicle drivers through seminars and workshops, regular meetings with the public transport sector and free publications for the industry.

Other officiating guests at today's ceremony included the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Lau Yip-shing; the Chairman of the Transport Advisory Committee, Mr Larry Kwok; and the Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee of the Road Safety Council, Miss Ma Ka-wai.
