SCED attends opening session of 11th WTO Ministerial Conference in Argentina (with photos)

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, attended the opening session of the 11th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference (MC11) today (December 10, Buenos Aires time) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
 
     The MC11 provides an opportunity for ministers to review the current work of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and reaffirm the importance of the open and rule-based multilateral trading system. It will be held from December 10 to 13.
 
     Before the opening session, Mr Yau chaired a ministerial breakfast meeting on investment facilitation (IF) for development attended by some like-mined WTO members. He said the MC11 is a timely opportunity to take the discussion on IF to the next level.

     "We are seeking to formally put the issue of IF on the WTO agenda, have a proper institutional set up to carry out more structured and focused discussions and work towards developing a multilateral framework on the IF issue which will benefit all WTO Members." he said.

     The breakfast meeting concluded with a Joint Statement sending a strong message that IF is a subject that ought to be formally introduced into the WTO.

     Mr Yau is one of the Vice Chairs of the MC11 and will chair some of the plenary sessions from tomorrow (December 11, Buenos Aires time) to December 13. As the Head of the Hong Kong, China delegation, he will deliver a statement at the plenary session tomorrow (December 11, Buenos Aires time).
