Cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Queen Mary Hospital

The spokesperson for Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) made the following announcement today (December 6):
A 1-month-old baby boy of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of QMH was confirmed to be a carrier of Community-associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) on September 14. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has continuously screened the infants who had contact with the index case at NICU. Four more babies (two male and two female, aged from 1 month to 3 months) who had stayed in the NICU were confirmed to be carriers of CA-MRSA. Two of the five babies had presented with infection symptoms previously and had recovered after treatment.
Among the five babies, three had been discharged and the other two are still hospitalised with stable condition due to underlying diseases.
Infection control measures of the NICU have already been stepped up according to prevailing guidelines. The hospital will perform enhanced medical surveillance and screening of the babies in the NICU.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
