Exhibition, Cantonese opera and carnivals among highlights of 20th anniversary celebration (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
A world heritage exhibition, a Cantonese opera show and three carnivals will be held in the coming days as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

The "Miles upon Miles: World Heritage along the Silk Road" exhibition, jointly presented by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be held at the Special Exhibition Gallery and the 1/F Main Lobby of the Hong Kong Museum of History from November 29 (Wednesday) to March 5, 2018. Visitors can explore the historical and cultural significance of the Silk Road through enjoying this exhibition of cultural relics.

The ancient trade route known as the Silk Road, stretching from Chang'an (present day Xi'an) in China, measured 10,000 kilometres from east to west, and 3,000 kilometres from north to south. Until the 16th century, this network played a significant role in fostering economic, cultural, religious and technological exchange among countries in the East and the West.

The focus of this exhibition is on the route network of the Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor of the Silk Road. Some 160 exhibits of invaluable artefacts have been selected from Shaanxi, Henan, Gansu and Xinjiang on the Mainland for display at the exhibition. More than 50 per cent of these are grade one national treasures, while a further 50 exhibits will come from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The exhibits include jade ware, textiles, sancai figurines, gold and silver ware, bronze ware and large-scale murals. The exhibition will be complemented by multimedia programmes and interactive elements to enrich the visitors' experience.

The opening hours of the exhibition will be 10am to 6pm on Monday and Wednesday to Friday; 10am to 7pm on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays; and 10am to 5pm on Christmas Eve and Chinese New Year's Eve. It will be closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays) and the first two days of Chinese New Year.

The admission fees are as follows:

  • Standard: $20; Group (20 persons or above): $14; and Concessionary: $10
  • Free admission for Museum Pass holders
