SCS visits Drainage Services Department (with photos)
*****************************************************
The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Joshua Law, today (November 16) visited the Drainage Services Department to better understand the department's work and meet with its staff of various grades.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Thomas Chow, Mr Law first met with the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Edwin Tong, and the directorate staff to get an update on the department's work on sewage treatment and flood prevention as well as challenges confronting them.

Mr Law then toured the Control Room and the Sha Tin Central Laboratory of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW). He was briefed by colleagues on the daily operation of the plant and the tests being carried out to monitor the quality of the treated effluent. Mr Law said he was pleased to learn that STSTW is equipped with a Combined Heat and Power Generator for generation of renewable energy using biogas produced through anaerobic digestion of sludge settling from the sewage treatment process, which can also effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

During the visit, Mr Law was also briefed on the progress of the plan to relocate STSTW to caverns. He learnt that after relocation, about 28 hectares of land with sea frontage will be released from the current site for better uses, and the living environment of the surroundings will be improved, bringing about both social and environmental benefits.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Law met with staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on matters that concern them. He expressed appreciation for colleagues' efforts and encouraged them to continue to provide efficient wastewater and stormwater drainage services.
