Chamber opera "Ghost Love" to be staged in January
**************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present a new production of the chamber opera "Ghost Love", adapted from the Chinese novella of the same title by Xu Xu with composition by Chan Hing-yan and a libretto by Yi Heng, in January next year.

Directed by Tomo Sugao and conducted by Lio Kuokman, the chamber opera will be performed by renowned local musicians including tenor David Quah, soprano Louise Kwong, bass-baritone Apollo Wong, pianist Timmy Tsang, shō player Loo Sze-wang and percussionist Ho Yi-on with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble providing musical accompaniment. The strong production team includes set and costume designer Ricky Chan and lighting designer Leo Cheung.

The chamber opera "Ghost Love" is based on a novella, depicting the elusive love between a man and a woman, that was written by Xu Xu during his stay in France. The story of the chamber opera commences in 1945 Shanghai when a man meets a female "ghost". The man, moved and touched by her beauty, seeks to unravel the enigma about her and see where their relationship would lead. In 1955, the man leaves post-war Shanghai and moves to Hong Kong. The dark unforgettable memory of those times recurs again in the dark dank air. When the world of "ghosts" is revealed, the man learns what it is to be "human". Xu Xu's work "Ghost Love" brought the writer success in the contemporary literary world. After the novella was published, he went on to become one of the most popular writers in modern Chinese literary circles.

The chamber opera "Ghost Love", performed in Putonghua with Chinese and English surtitles, will be staged at 8pm on January 12 and 13 (Friday and Saturday) and at 3pm on January 14 (Sunday) at the Theatre of Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $340 and $420 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk).
