EPD successfully prosecutes bamboo worker for illegal disposal of construction waste following report from public

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) received a report from a member of the public in May this year, with photos and detailed information provided, which stated that a bundle of bamboo had been deposited on the roadside at Hamilton Street in Yau Ma Tei. Upon investigation, the EPD confirmed that there were scaffolding works at a nearby building and a worker had deposited bamboo poles on the roadside. The department subsequently initiated prosecution against the worker.
An EPD spokesman said, "Members of the public can make a report and provide relevant information to the EPD if they witness illegal disposal of construction waste, to help combat such illegal activity."
The spokesman reminded building renovation contractors and people handling construction waste that they should dispose of waste properly in accordance with the law. Reusable materials or waste with recycling value should be collected by recyclers, while non-recyclable waste should be delivered to appropriate waste management facilities, such as public fill reception facilities or landfills.
Under the WDO, it is an offence for anyone to dispose of waste at public places. First-time offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and six months' imprisonment.
