Star Parents Programme 2016-17 helps parents fight drugs together with children (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The closing ceremony of the Star Parents Programme 2016-17 was held today (November 3) to conclude the parent-oriented anti-drug preventive education activities conducted over the past year. Jointly organised by the Narcotics Division (ND) of the Security Bureau, the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) and Radio Television Hong Kong's Radio 5 (RTHK-5), the Programme aimed at raising parents' awareness of the drug problem and enhancing their relevant knowledge and skills.

More than 100 parents attended the closing ceremony today to show their determination to fight drugs together with their children, and to protect their children from drug harms by mounting a solid first line of defence in the family.

Officiating at the closing ceremony, the Chairman of the ACAN Sub-committee on Preventive Education and Publicity, Dr Tik Chi-yuen, said that good family relationships can reinforce children's determination to refuse drug temptations. Family education was therefore an important defence against youngsters falling prey to drugs. He called on parents to communicate more with their children, to seek to understand their thinking and the pressures on them, and to provide them with guidance and assistance in a timely manner. He also said that parents should build up their knowledge of the drug problem, and learn to identify and offer early help to their children if they might be troubled by drugs.

Also officiating at the closing ceremony, the Commissioner for Narcotics, Ms Manda Chan, encouraged young people to establish positive values and healthy lifestyles, and to acquire a clear understanding of drug harms. Parents who suspect their children of having drug problems can seek help from professional social workers through the ND's 24-hour hotline 186 186, or by sending messages to 98 186 186 by WhatsApp or WeChat.

Three school tours were organised under the Star Parents Programme 2016-17 in the past year. Parents were invited to visit primary and secondary schools to experience school life and exchange views with anti-drug experts. The tours provided opportunities for parents to personally understand and feel the pressure faced by their children, in a bid to facilitate better parent-child communication. In addition, a 26-episode radio interview series was produced by RTHK and broadcast on the RTHK-5 radio programme "Stand by Me". Guest speakers from different walks of life were invited to share their life experiences, from which anti-drug messages were conveyed to the audience.

Many parent participants said that by joining the Star Parents Programme they had gained a better understanding of the drug problem, as well as practical knowledge on improving family relationships and preventing their children from taking drugs. They said they were committed to building a closer relationship with their children and fighting drugs with them together.

Other officiating guests at today's closing ceremony included the Controller (Radio) of RTHK, Mr Brian Chow, and artistes Maple Hui, Jimmy Wong and Joe Cheng. For details of the Programme, please visit the designated webpage.
