The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, and the Under Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Chui Tak-yi, visited Wan Chai District today (November 2) to inspect environmental hygiene conditions and visit an elderly community centre as well as meet with members of the Wan Chai District Council (WCDC).

Accompanied by the District Officer (Wan Chai), Mr Rick Chan, and WCDC members, Professor Chan and Dr Chui first inspected the environmental hygiene conditions near Bowrington Road.

Professor Chan and Dr Chui then visited Wan Chai Methodist Centre for the Seniors to learn about the implementation of the Dementia Community Support Scheme and chat with elderly persons who have participated in the Scheme.

Funded by the Community Care Fund, the Scheme provides community support services for elderly people with mild or moderate dementia and their carers in district elderly community centres through a medical-social collaboration model.

Wan Chai Methodist Centre for the Seniors is one of the service units of the Scheme in Wan Chai District and organises activities for more than 30 elderly persons with a view to training their cognitive ability and enhancing their self-care and physical abilities so as to delay brain deterioration.

Professor Chan said, "As mentioned in the Chief Executive's Policy Address, we will regularise the Scheme and extend it to all 41 district elderly community centres. We will continue to enhance community health through cross-sector and multi-disciplinary collaboration so that more elderly people can live healthily and enjoy their golden years."

Before the end of the visit, Professor Chan and Dr Chui met with the Chairman of the WCDC, Mr Stephen Ng; the Vice Chairman of the WCDC, Dr Jennifer Chow; and WCDC members to listen to their views on healthcare and environmental hygiene issues in the district.
